The word Nidra means sleep in Sanskrit. When combined with the word yoga, it represents a paradox— Yoga Nidra is an invitation to awaken. Yoga Nidra strengthens our awareness across all states of consciousness, even deep sleep. The ancient yogis noticed that people were asleep to their true nature— yogas citta vritti nirodaha.

  • Yoga Nidra guides us to access a deeper quality of rest

  • When combined with awareness— with yoga— Nidra can transform our sleep into more restful, healing restoration ”

  • Yoga Nidra utilizes sankalpa, or heartfelt desire, and the koshas, or energy bodies, to move us deeper to our natural state

  • We move from body to breath to being, from the dense to the subtle

The Dalai Lama said “sleep is the best meditation.” Stress is a normal part of life. When we label or believe stress is “bad” we lose resiliency. Many of us are afraid to sleep— afraid we will miss something, lose something, afraid it isn’t safe. We may feel we don’t have enough time to sleep, or we place less importance on it.

What kind of mind shift about sleep would feel like a breath of fresh air to you? What would touch your heart or soul in relationship to sleep?

Give yourself permission to rest and heal. Try this Yoga Nidra practice to shift your relationship with sleep and rest.
